Happy Anniversary Kids...

When two of our children got married in the same year, I thought I was going to go crazy....
There was so much to do, but mostly for me there was so much to keep organized. Our oldest got married to a wonderful girl in September, then our daughter  got married to a wonderful boy in October.

Whew

Whirlwind

We planned and purchased and organized and coordinated. It was a fun time for everyoe, even though it was hectic. Now that they are all married and it has been almost a year for both, I thought I would let them know how I really feel.

**I love their spouses as if they were my own children. I respect their wishes and their thoughts. They all have their own homes they have established and I love that too. I think after a year they have learned so much about being married, yet they have so far to go. I try to be the kind of mother in law that is deserving of their love, and I try to be the best me I can be. I am a shoulder to cry on, a heart to celebrate with. I want to be a great witness to them of Gods love, and in my own marraige I want them to see how married couples should treat one another. I want them to understand that marraige is a lifelong commitment- it was in the vows and in their hearts the day they were married. I would like them to be honest with me, and open about their choices.  I want them to have success in life, and to understand that perfection is highly over rated. I want them to all know that they can depend on dad and I for anything. Most of all I want them to know we love them unconditionally.

There are a lot of things in life I would have liked to taught my children before marraige, then I realized that  most of those things I learned while married. My husband and I have been through a lot of crazyness where family goes. We have seen the best and the worst of people in their relationships with us and others. We have learned a few really valuable lessons:

*there is no room for jealousy in marriage from any source
*commitment to your spouse is your priority
*communication is key, and not one sided
*love comes in many forms but you shouldn't have to ask for it

When my next two get married I will feel the same way. I want to honor the sanctity of their marraiges with a whole heart, and an understanding that even though they are always going to be my children they belong to someone else after marraige, and I couldn't be happier or prouder of the men and women they have all become.

Praying for my children and their spouses, current and future....

Letting Them Go

My heart dropped clear into my stomach, then I am almost certain I heard it hit the floor.

"Sure  you can take my car...." I heard myself say to my son.

Sixteen years old and within two weeks of a serious car accident, caused by himself.

What on earth was I thinking?

I can tell you what I was thinking-" How about I just drive you tonight?"
My heart was screaming- "How could you let him go?"

I was certain I was about to be sick. The parents worst nightmare- letting them go.
In any capacity, letting them go is the most heart-wrenching and stomach turning decision to make. In all of my anxiety, I am sitting on the loveseat, by the window, flashing back to every parenting mistake I have made with all four of my children. From a child getting injured to a child being pressured , I have made my share of parenting mistakes. And sometimes I could have stopped them- had I listened to my "gut instinct"

I am still waiting for him to return home, reminding myself that while I believe the Holy Spirit guides my instinct, I alone have the choice over the decisions I make as a parent or otherwise. I also have the choice over reliving my mistakes as a parent. My son is a good driver- he is just young. He is always going to be learning, and I am always going to be anxious about it. But I know God has His hand on him the entire time he is in the car or otherwise. I remind myself even though there is worry and anxiety involved in parenting, there is also Grace

Grace given for a momma who so desperately wants to hear the car in the driveway. Grace for a son who may be just as scared to drive, and even more afraid to admit it. Grace for the moment when I know I must let him go, just like his brother and sister         before him, and the same as the brother coming behind.

My heart flutters heavy as I hear the hum of the engine and see  the flash of the lights. I have said this prayer over and over and I keep it next to my heart:
"Lord, he is not mine, but yours. Thank you for the time I have been given with him. Thank you for his smile and his humor, and I pray I get another day."

I ask for calm, patience and trust as I continue to let them go.

the storm

The storm in our part of the country in the last few weeks has nothing on the storm in my heart...

Being the mother of 4 children, I can tell you  I have experienced more levels of emotions than anyone ever could have prepared me for . My husband and I have spent countless hours nurturing their hearts, changing their diapers, band-aiding their boo-boos, and taking them for ice cream when their hearts were broken. We have spent time in the emergency room, parent teacher conferences, church trips, vacations, sports, birthday parties and picking up from friends houses. We have spent countless amounts of money on shoes, clothing, fast food, video games, vacations, potato chips and soda. We have replaced furniture, carpet, electronics and appliances. We have sacrificed friendships and endured hardships for the sake of our family.

And now that our children are grown and moving out on their own, I wish I could do it all over again. I would say things to them that I never said, I would change the things I didn't act on immediately and I would have read the bible to them more. I would never miss a Sunday of church, and church camp would have been mandatory. There would be no tv in every room, no video games or cable access 24-7. There would be college funds, car funds and insurance funds. There would be more vegetables.

I cannot go back and do it all over again, and I think my children are going to survive. I know parents always say they want more for their kids than they had- but is that really such a good idea? We have 5 working tvs in this house, two Kindles, Three lap tops and a desktop,  3 working video game systems, 2 televisions with satellite access, and not one bookshelf.

(We use the library, and the Kindles, so technically we do read. Well, some of us read. Some of us - just don't.)

Instead of beating my self up about my children and my failures- as I see them- as a parent, maybe I should be grateful they are all healthy, alive and independent. Maybe I should just ask God to bless them and intercede on their behalf because I am their mother and I love them. Maybe I should stop comparing myself to those other moms who feed their kids organic carrots and have never visited a fast food restaurant for dinner. Maybe I should learn from Martha when she was preparing for a visit from Jesus instead of focusing on him. After all, if I had done that all along, maybe I wouldn't have those guilty regrets in the first place.

I do not want to discourage mommas who are having moments of being overwhelmed and trying to get it all done. But I will say this- when you are sitting where I am sitting, and two of your babies have flown the coop, been married and are developing families, and the other two babies are sprouting and trying out their wings, you realize that laundry, organic carrots and hair styles are not all that important. It doesn't matter what your mother in law says, or the lady at the boutique. The comments from other moms at the soccer field or the looks from the moms who lead the PTO are only going to last while they are being spoken. The second you walk away, they have all forgotten you and your brood- I can almost guarantee it.

And what does your brood remember?

That their momma chose their smile over laundry, their ice cream face over carrots and their splashing in the rain over keeping her hair tidy. They remember your encouragement as they head off to high school, and your tears as they get married. They remember your smile, your comforting hug and that where ever their momma is, that is where they will always belong- no matter what.

The storm in my heart will always rage for my children- they will always be the first people I want to share things with (after my hubby), and the ones I will hurt for, ache with and love in an emotional way that only a mother can understand. When I look at them I see freckles, dirt, milk mustaches and smiles. I see their accomplishments and I see their failure all as my own. I help them get up and dust off when they fall, and I still dry their tears when disappointed.

As this storm rages, a new storm is brewing, in the generation of my grandchildren. If you can believe it, this storm is stronger than the last, because I already know what its like to love a child of my own- and having them raise another generation is just absolutely breathtaking.

Praying for this generation and the next-in parenting and beyond.

the scary truth

Yesterday  at 1:09 I got the call no parent ever wants to get. The school called to say there had been a threat at the the high school and they had moved all of the students to the middle school for safety until the building was deemed "clear".

Say WHAT?!

The next couple of hours were quite worrysome. I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry a little, or have all of those images of other school crisis run through my head at least once. ( OK, maybe all afternoon, and might I add thank you to the media for replaying them so often they are burned into my memory forever) My friend , whom I was on the phone with at the time of the call, was also worried. Her son is at the middle school, and her thought was, "great- make the middle school a target too, not that there are twice the kids there".  Parents started criticizing the school right away, some out of fear, lack of control over their child's safety, and some because that is their role in our community.  (didn't say it was right, I said it was their chosen role)

I sent my son a text right away-
 "Are you guys ok?"
"Yes- we walked to the middle school gym"
"Do I need to come get you?"
"Noicanthavemyhoneoutrightnow."

(translation- "No, I can't have my phone out right now.")

Good to know

Whew- somehow even a text hearing from one of my boys made me feel better. At 2:30, another call came, letting parents know the kids still could not return to the school for their things, they would need to make other arrangements to get home, even if they drove their own car because the bomb squad had been dispatched to sweep the school, parking lot and surrounding area.

Sha-zamm. There goes my calm, right out the window. Since school gets out at 3:00, I loaded myself into the truck and went to get my boys. No sense in them sitting in the gym doing nothing for another thirty minutes.  The school was cleared by 4:00 and we went to pick up everything they had left behind. (as a side note a shout out to the ladies and gentlemen in the middle school office dealing with all us crazy worried parents they did an awesome job!)

On the ride home, neither boy showed any real concern for the days events. It was a message in the girls bathroom. They just didn't see the reason for panic. They agreed the school did everything right to keep them safe, and they aren't worried about returning today. I think that was the general consensus of the kids. They were more aggravated at the interruption in schedule than the remote possibility that someone at their school built any type of device to hurt anyone at their school.

The scary truth in this situation is, no matter how good of a parent you are, you cannot protect them from it all. They know by the time they are in high school the difference between right and wrong. They know other people may try to make life hard on them. They know about sex, bullying, drugs and driving. They know how to say no, how to call their mom and when to step in to protect one another. They are what I like to call pseudo-adults. I like this word because it aggravates them (hehe) and it gives them credit for the growing up they are doing, while keeping them in the confines of being able to lean on their momma and dad.

I also during this entire situation had to keep reminding myself that my children are children of God first. They were his first, and most importantly. If for some crazy reason they are torn from this world, it would devastate me. But, I know my Father will take care of my children better than I ever could, because He is my everything, and He is capable. So if I should ever get this call again, I know I will react in my very helpless human way- but I will always know that God has my back in every situation, and that is my only true source of comfort.

Praying today for the school, students, staff, administration and authorities that everyone is safe and not so on edge today...

Blessings Abundant

What a beautiful day, full of blessings around every corner!

First I woke up this morning to the giggles of the tornado-
(our granddaughter) . She was running around in her little white t-shirt and diaper chasing the dogs with a hairbrush, giggling so much it was contagious. Needless to say the dogs were very happy to see me distract her.

Then my adorable husband worked in the garden and with the help of our oldest son, got the barn roof fixed! The chickens will be happy, because once again their coop will stay dry when it rains!

While all the projects were going on, I went to the church and co- hosted the wedding shower for my future daughter-in-law. She was so excited, so happy and so beautiful! The true highlight of the party was her smile. I was completely blessed to see it spread across her face.

There is such a ministry in doing wedding showers for people who have no church home or are struggling in their life or faith. Aside from being completely blessed by seeing a smiling, happy bride, I love the idea of celebrating a new beginning for a woman. As women, we get stuck in ruts that life provides for us very easily. Its not like with men, who for the most part do not see the importance of fellowship and celebration  for "girly" causes such as weddings or babies.

Lets face it, the bride is the pinnacle of the wedding, and the momma the pinnacle of the new baby. She is a vessel for setting up her home, and her nursery. She historically has depended on the other women in her community to teach her everything she needs to know to start this new chapter in her life. What a better way than to celebrate with a shower, small gifts and words of wisdom! (kudos to whomever invented these showers- ingenious)

I love it when the older women mix in with the younger ones, telling stories and sharing words of wisdom about marriage and babies. Its so important to surround a new couple or new momma with the love that only Christ can provide- unconditional, non judgmental and complete.

As a ministry, I can testify to the importance of this support- when my future daughter in law came to  my house the day of her baby shower, I was SO TOUCHED by the women from my congregation who came and brought her a piece of themselves, unselfishly, lovingly supporting this new terrified momma, just because they were my sisters in Christ. Our love for Christ is what ties us together, and that love extended to her and my entire family that day. My husband and I were very touched by this, and we will never forget it.

Its also fun to have something that the men in our lives never understand-hehe .

At the end of the day, when everything is cleaned up, and everyone goes home, the bride gets to see just how much the people in her life love her, and are willing to do to take care of her. The hope is that she will define her life not by the things she is given, but by the wisdom she gains as a wife and mother. That she will allow God to reign and will follow a path full of love and hope for the future of her family.

From my heart, I love to serve- it has always been my strength. I love to do little things to make people smile and reflect on the moment.  I love the pretty table settings, the beautiful bride or momma and the wonder on her face when she sees the room, all decorated in things that are useful in her home. The extra touches of a scrapbook after the event, of the event are precious memories for her. And a reminder to me that when serving , you are for more blessed than you can imagine. For those who know me well enough to see my life has changed, this entire journey has been a true blessing to me. Learning how to use my servants gift to show Christ has been a long journey, but I continue to try, and when I get knocked down, I get up and try again.

Pray for a servants heart so you can be a blessing to others.

CORA..

She is an eighth grader...and an amazing girl!

She is taking horseback riding lessons for the heck of it..and she looks like a natural on the horse!
She saddles up, grooms and goes....

I have to say Cora is very special to me...she is my first niece on either side of the family, and her sense of humor is amazing! She spends time rooting for the OSU BUCKEYES, and time with us .
She also likes to shoot guns and hunt and fish , and she is very good at it!
She is not your typical girls, and I'm glad.

School Lunches

So good morning everyone!
I just wanted to ask a few questions....
I know some of you are home schooling moms, and I can appreciate that so much more now that I am one too!

My questions concern school lunches and solutions...

I know what my kids likes and dislikes are....I know who likes tuna, and who doesn't, I have a yogurt eater and a cheese stick eater...I have a junk food junkie too...:)
( incidentally she gets it from me....)

My biggest two dilemmas are time and money- of course.
Our school lunches are HORRIBLE .....tiny and frozen, so the school decided they would switch companies and go another route...the kids say they are better, but I am not convinced. I know somewhere out there , there is a mom who has developed a plan to overcome school lunch trauma and get her kids into the habit of eating the good stuff on a regular basis- she just isn't me....:)

I'm looking for a few simple tricks that are cost effective to use in packing our lunches...

My boys are 10 and 11, daughter in High School.....so they need good stuff that is portable...I'm just out of ideas...:)

And I need to keep my sanity...

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions....

OR MAKE FUN OF MOM WITH THE CAMERA AND ACT LIKE WE ARE LOOKING FOR ALIENS....

AND SOMETIMES WE GET CAUGHT JUST BEING A BOY.

LAST WEEKEND WE WENT CAMPING AS ONE LAST OUTING BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS. IT WAS FUN AND RELAXING. OUR FAMILY NEEDED IT.

This is the baby chick "stripe" he/she is bonding with my hubby quite well....lol

My niece thinks the "fuzzy" ones are the best- wait til she figures out they dont stay fuzzy long!

This is my little chicken man- Mackenzie- he is soooo good with animals- he really has a heart for them. He takes care of them all- the dogs, cats, chickens and our turtle. He wants a goat, but we are trying to add things to our place one at a time, and it was the chickens turn......

He is 10 and has a heart of gold. He likes to ride his bike and play in the dirt with mom :) I love his excitement about the outdoors, and I love it that he isnt afraid of trying new things. He still likes to cuddle on the couch, and he plays in the rain like its the best thing in the world.
Mackenzie used to want everyone to call him Maxx, due to seeing the movie "Max Keebles big move" about a thousand times when he was little.
He asked me to home school him a few weeks ago! I guess the allure of mom working from home is too much for him- he wants to be here all the time.
I love it that my youngest is still my baby, and that he is still so innocent !
He talks a lot about the bible, and wants to know why God did all the things he did- but he asks one thing at a time.....Its truly exausting, but I wouldnt change a thing.
